Today is the shortest day of the year - the winter solstice - a time to reflect on our health and replenish our energy.
Winter Solstice is a turning point in the natural cycles and the perfect time for each one of us to set new intentions for the next year.
For me, an intention is to nurture and grow my Yogarama business - yoga and drama classes for kids and yoga classes for adults at Wylies Bath in Coogee.
Join our yoga class on the deck at Wylies Baths in Coogee on Sunday mornings 830-930am - an invigorating and healing class that will connect your mind, body and breath.
Yoga can help build up your resistance to those winter blues and resist those unwanted cold and flu bugs.
The hatha vinyasa yoga style class is open to all levels. First class is free for new students.
Sunday mornings 830-930am, Neptune st Wylies Baths in Coogee.
COOGEE-COUPLE COMBINE YOGA & DRAMA FOR KIDS
When Tony and Daniella met over 15 years ago, his passion was drama and hers, yoga. Yogarama-Drama is the inspiration of this Coogee couple that have combined yoga and drama in holiday camps for kids 8-12 years old at their home in Coogee.
Daniella and Tony, who are parents of young teenagers, believe that helicopter parenting has led to busy and stressed out kids that have not learnt to switch off and relax and are often left feeling anxious. Children’s busy schedules have lead to emotional and physical stress that manifests in their young bodies and mind.
On the flipside, many children are so often plugged into technology that this leads to poor flexibility, a lack of focus and stifled imagination.
Yogarama-Drama workshops are a fun and inspiring experience that sparks creativity and strengthens the mind-body connection in a safe and nurtured, environment.
Yogarama-drama workshops are designed to be a fun and inspiring experience that sparks creativity and strengthens the mind-body connection in a safe and nurtured, environment.
The drama program is led by Tony Sloman, a professional actor, that has taught drama for over 15 years. “The yogarama-drama program allows the kids to gain confidence whilst developing the art of acting,” says Tony.
8 year old Orley said she loved the drama activities, most of all, the “human machine”. Five kids jump up into a line to be part of a human machine. Each child has to create and maintain a sound and movement in time with the other kids in the human machine”.
"This exercise sparks the imagination and boosts a child’s concentration and awareness of others in the human machine" says Tony.
“Yoga is a perfect companion to drama encouraging calm breathing and flexibility in the body and mind when performing,” he said.
“We encourage the kids to use their breath so that they can make loud or soft sounds and teach them to focus on their breath to be centered”.
Daniella Sloman-Goldberg, a qualified yoga instructor who has practiced yoga since she was five years old is running the Kids yoga class. She has a passion for teaching yoga to young and old.
“In the yoga class, we nurture the kids to build flexibility, body strength, gratitude and confidence” she said.
For 10 year old James who attended the Yoga and Drama Workshop last holidays, he said his favourite activity was the yoga nidra, the full body relaxation, at the end of the day.
"The kids have lots of high energy fun first doing the drama activities, this makes them open to embrace the yoga activities, relaxation and mindful meditation at the end of the class, says Daniella. We teach them skills to just let go and relax."
Yogarama-drama camp is being held during the July school holidays and classes will soon be offered to local primary schools.
